I’ve wanted to be a criminal defense lawyer since I was 14 years old. I know that because a teacher once had his homeroom class write an essay about what they wanted to do when they grew up. This was in the 60s. People said they wanted to be airline pilots or major league baseball players. I wanted to be a criminal defense lawyer. What I really like about it is achieving the client’s goals. Whether it’s a jury trial or a jury-waived trial that a client wants, I’ve done over 205 major criminal cases in the Superior and Federal courts. At the end of a case, however it turns out, I always leave as a friend of my client.

My father used to say when I was growing up, “Self-praise is no praise.” In fact, it became such a cardinal fact of my upbringing that we called it “SP is no P.” So I’m a little uncomfortable, but I’ll tell you what means the most to me. I’m a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the most prestigious organization for trial lawyers in the United States. For 20 years, I was co-chair of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Strike Force. I was the one most often called when a lawyer faced contempt or other improper pressure. For 24 years, I was on the Judicial Nominating Commission under five different governors. This is a real appreciative value of having me on that very high honor. Recently, I was in the second group admitted to the Massachusetts Lawyers Hall of Fame.
