Where will a lapse of judgment take you?

Law Office of Carney, Gaudet & Carney

Jerry Springer’s security director Steve Wilkos was recently arrested for operating under the influence (OUI) after a car accident. When he made a statement about his arrest, he stated a “complete lapse of judgment” caused the unfortunate incident to happen.

Wilcos’ statement is extremely accurate, as a combination of alcohol and driving can go awry surprisingly easily. Alcohol intake can impair judgment and reasoning in as little as two drinks. This consumption leaves your decision to drive an impaired one. Here are some ways to proactively plan for a safe ride home.

Keep Track

Make sure that you realize not only how much you drink but also over what span of time those drinks occurred. It’s easy to think that you’ve been at the bar for a couple of hours when it has been less than an hour and one half, leaving less time for the alcohol to exit your system. Make sure that you eat something with your drinks, as alcohol on an empty stomach can impair your level of sobriety even more.

Take Alternative Transport

If you drank one or more drinks than you had planned to but need to get home, take a bus or taxi, or get a ride from a friend that hasn’t been drinking. If you know that you and your friends are going out for a night of clubbing, plan on someone in your group to serve as a designated driver.

Facing an OUI after an impaired decision can inspire feelings of dread about what the future may hold. Aggressive and experienced representation can make the consequences of a charge much milder than feared.
